So

I've been reading some Isaiah lately. Today at meeting while I was reading Isaiah (I often read the bible a little to settle my mind into worship), some words triggered a memory, and the chorus of this song rose up in me. It's a very beautiful hymn that I used to sing with the nuns when I was discerning my vocation with them. I got home and looked up the rest of the lyrics:

I will come to you in the silence,
I will lift you from all your fear.
You will hear My voice, I claim you as my choice,
be still and know I am here.

I am hope for all who are hopeless,
I am eyes for all who long to see.
In the shadows of the night, I will be your Light,
Come and rest in me.

Do not be afraid, I am with you.
I have called you each by name.
Come and follow me, I will bring you home;
I love you and you are mine.

I am strength for all the despairing,
Healing for the ones who dwell in shame.
All the blind will see, the lame will all run free,
and all will know my name.

I am the Word that leads all to freedom,
I am the peace the world cannot give.
I will call your name, embracing all your pain,
stand up, now walk, and live!

Here is the reading from Isaiah 42:

But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour...

...you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you...

...do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your offspring from the east,
and from the west I will gather you;
I will say to the north, 'Give them up',
and to the south, 'Do not withold;
bring my sons from far away
and my daughters from the end of the earth--
everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.'
Bring forth the people who are blind, yet have eyes,
who are deaf, yet have ears!
Let all the nations gather together,
and let the people assemble.

I don't know that I have much to say yet beyond sharing those with you...

Amanda,

Thanks for sharing this - and also for the previous post on Fox's letter to Lady Claypole.

I'd like to hear more about that YAF weekend at Powell House. I expected the blogosphere to be brimming with news of it, but so far... very little.

Amanda,

Parts of Isaiah remind me of Fox's vision of "a great people to be gathered." Thanks for lifting up these lyrics and verses.
