So, this morning I was doing work-study at the ballet theatre. The revered blind pianist, Rosie, comes in. I help her to her seat.
"Is Bridgette around?" she asks.
"I'm not sure." I say "What does she look like?"
Just as I realize what I've said and am choking back my howls of humiliated despair, without missing a beat she snaps:
"I said Richard, not Bridgette! What, are you deaf?
Auuuuuuugh.
AAAAUuuuuuuuuuugh.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh!
Through the various tribulations of today, this link from my much loved office-mate has helped a lot:

Aw, that totally stinks. On the other hand, it sounds like she was pretty nasty in response, so wouldn't feel too bad. We all make little faux pas from time to time.
Here's to a better weekend!
Oh Kiddo...
It takes a strong constitution to get through a lot of days... folks snaping at thee or me... ah yes... here we are in a society of Friends, which is supposed to be a community founded on love, hummm... well, I have been travelling a bit, I noticed that a lot of big states have several yearly meetings... I mentioned to a few folks, why not us? We hear about so many folks, who can't afford time and money to run up to Rochester for committee meetings, well, I come back to find a number of GOOD friends and Friends are mad as hell at me for broaching the subject. Seems, conversation has become conclution, and I've threatened the institution again.
Oh well, I only say this because, as thee knows well, Ballet is a great joy, and I have met MANY wonderful folks when I worked with a ballet company back stage... BUT... it is also a haven for some folks who would like to eat thy ego for lunch. Keep thy eye on thy joy in dancing, and be gentle with the ones who would hurt you on puropse. Thee knows a certain Friend who for years was, well, not fond of me, as we had greatly different Quaker traditions, thee sees how he has softened to me over the years - ( by the way, I'm getting him his suit :) just in case thee needs more of a hint! - and I don't have to mail it far to the west!!! ) The point is, putting these feelings of hurt aside is the only way for us to live the love that gives us joy as Friends. If thee never softens her heart, she will not harden or hurt thyne.
Hope thee takes a step class or two every so often,
Thy Friend ( the dangerous agitator of 15th St. ... )

PS It might be a comfort to remember that thy friend has been blind a lot longer than thee has been interacting with her... thy reflexes are to be expected from living in a generally sited world... and if she can't laugh at thy slip... well,
I offered to help a fellow cross the street last year, often I find people who can't see have trouble with the quiet engines and lots of back ground noise in the city... have trouble telling when it is ok to cross wide streets. I said, " can I give you a hand?" He said, "No, I've got two thanks..." He than laughed and said, that he was very used to crossing city streets unaided... there is a fellow who is comfortable with the fact that not everybody needs a good dose of judgement...
At the end of the day, thee has a good story to laugh with friends over, and that may be worth a little red in the face.
Sending thee and Jeff a big smile on this gray rainy day in New York

Wel... thy two Chinese Architecture students on the link thee provides from thy office mate... have made NBC's morning show now two days running, 1/3 hour of fame, Andy Warhol would approve. If I were thee, I'd celibrate with a buffalo steak (stir fried of course - wearing a Rockets T-shirt, go Yao!).
:)
