Beer and Peanuts

are especially tasty while reading medical anthropology. Don't ask me why.

School starts tomorrow....without my laptop I am feeling a tad nervous...the laptop revolutionized my note-taking and test-studying skills. Now it's back to the old tablet and chisel for me.

Recently discovered a friend is a hardcore-this-isn't-funny-detox-doesn't-work-he's-just-going-to-keep hurting-me-and-himself alcoholic. I finally had to tell him to call me when he was ready to try for something other than a tragedy. It was pretty horrible. He's such a lovely person in so many ways and it's heart-breaking to go from thinking "hmm, he drinks too much" to realizing that when he's in his way he doesn't care about anything but the drinking. I'm praying for him, but I wish I could do more. But I can't. You can't help someone who doesn't want help, and at least I know enough now to campaign for self-preservation, as foreign as that is to my personality. It's so, so sad.

It's beautifully fall now. I am wearing a sweater, a cap, and a scarf. Thank God for fall. I love layers.

Good, though full, meeting this morning. I gave ministry, which happens a lot, and that makes me uncomfortable, because it seems as if I need to spend more timre silent (though I spend a lot of silent time alone these days) but it seemed to be needed and it seemed to help people. I think there is a gift in my talent for self-exposure. God can use my #1 liability and mold it to be a tool, if I will let him. It is a strange and holy thing.

Okay, now I need a nap.

Oh how I would love a beer! I had one this year, a labats in Quebec, sitting on a porch at night looking at a full moon (photo on flickr of me slapping a quite visable mosqueto on my forehead)

Wine is OK for my liver, beer is not.

Nor is beer good for getting rid of 40 pounds I still need to loose.

My blog entry on Carl, the scow sailor, homeless in the park was published in full - I will send it to thee... and I am working on a piece about the HOWL festival with another writer. My bit is on my blog this week, not sure of what the final edit will look like...

But, fall is wonderful. Wearing my three piece plain suit. Genie and I and another friend were in Lancaster last Friday. Had a great talk, and a little singing, with a wonderful plain mennonite woman, who wrote for an Amish newspaper. She turned out to be the first cousin of the couple we went to the Green Dragon with last year, by horse and buggie. I wish thee had been there for the conversation, it was wonderful. I gave her a stack of photos from my portfolio, she just loved the photo of Tattooed Bill.
We met them as my friend Mark was photographing his pony and buggy. He did not see Annie and her husband come up behind, "I'm sorry," Mark said"If I knew you were here I'd have asked if I can photograph your horse." "Oh, don't worry, da horse don't mind the way I do... " her husband answered.
Lancaster restores the spirit so. And more, Kutztown, as a plain community that has little tourism. We had a grand time, one great conversation after another. Did thee know Kutztown means Vomitville in Pensulvania Dutch?

DO try and get thy lap top - there are some really cheep ones in flea markets here (check thy email about this). A lap top is so important for some students (me for example).
Thee can't let friends who drink too much drag thee down.
Be strong and happy, and know many dear friends are praying for thee.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. It's also hard (if I am understanding your meaning right) to watch out for yourself first, as necessary as it is.

I went from talking too little in Meeting to talking too much, or at least talking more than I think I should. But today I didn't shake for 30 minutes before finally standing up, like I usually do.

I was able to buy a nice older but heavy IBM laptop from a student for
about 350 dollars, but my older son has kind of kidnapped it, becuase it's the only computer we have with Excel on it. I'll probably get it back some day...
